How to prime a vape coil

If you’ve clicked on this blog, there’s a high chance you’re new to the vaping world and need assistance. You’re in the right place! This blog is essentially a beginner's guide to help you through the maintenance of your coil.

First of all, what is a vape coil? A coil is the heating element that helps create the vapour when you vape. The interior of the coil is made up of metal wire and wick material, which is most likely cotton. Depending on the style of the vape device, you can either inhale from the mouthpiece or press down the button (usually found on the side of the device), which will then allow the battery to activate. This then heats the coil to create the vapour.

There are different types of coils; the two main types of coils are meshed coils and spiral coils. These two coils have a few differences, which will alter your vaping experience:

  • A meshed coil heats the e-liquid faster, whereas a spiral coil heats the e-liquid unevenly, as they don’t always make contact with the wick, which leads to burning the e-liquid faster
  • Mesh coils offer a richer e-liquid taste
  • Mesh coils are ideal for creating larger vapour clouds with a lower nicotine strength
  • Spiral coils are best suited for sub-ohm kits/ tanks as they offer more customization when choosing the wattage

What does priming your coils mean…

The word ‘priming’ means preparing or getting something ready, so priming your coil is essentially getting it ready to vape. Priming your coils is a crucial step in preparing and maintaining your vape coils.

Why should you have to prime your coil…

You’re probably wondering if you actually need to prime the coil… in fact, it's an important step in setting up your coil/pod. If this step is missed, you will definitely burn the coil and e-liquid instantly, and it will just taste nasty! Investing time and effort in looking after your coil will ensure longevity usage.

Step-by-step guide on how to prime your coil:

  1. First, you will need to get out your coil, pod/tank, and e-liquid
  2. Next, you will need to get your coil and drip a few drops of e-liquid into each wicking slot (this is the gaps around the coil where you can see the cotton)
  3. Insert the coil into the pod/tank
  4. You will then need to fill your pod/tank with the same e-liquid
  5. Set aside for approximately 5-10 minutes
  6. Check that the recommended wattage is set (this can be found on the device box or online)
  7. Once this time has passed, you can then vape away!

**If you have a fixed coil in a pod, you will only need to do steps 4 to 7

What will happen if you don’t prime your coil?

  • You will instantly burn the cotton, which will taste horrible
  • The e-liquid will turn a yellowish brown, indicating that it's burnt
  • Creates waste - You will most likely throw the coil away and clean out the burnt e-liquid, which is a complete waste

If any of the following happens, you will need to empty the e-liquid from the pod/tank and remove the coil. If you have a fixed coil, you will need to replace the whole pod and start the priming process over.

How long do coils last?

The research and development of coils and pods has progressed so much over the years that, in most cases, their longevity has improved dramatically. Many people are now getting in excess of a month. However, this can vary, and signs such as darkening liquid or even changes in the quality of the liquid or amount of vapour produced are a good sign that it’s time to change. There are no hard and fast rules on this, as different concentrates can degrade the wicking material quicker than others would. Trust your taste buds on this one.

What is the best e-liquid?

Aside from knowing how to prime your coil, choosing the right e-liquid for the preferred coil and vape kit plays an important role, too.

All vape coils are compatible with freebase, nicotine salts, and 50/50 VG/PG shortfill e-liquids; however, there are certain coils that are best suited for higher VG/PG e-liquids. You will find these types of coils in sub-ohm devices as they produce bigger cloud production.
